After 101 economists sign warning letter

Netanyahu: "I answered a hypothetical"

Prime Minister clarifies Friday's blockchain-economy remarks that sparked uproar among economists and officials: I didn't say this is what's going to happen

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the storm surrounding his recent economic remarks in an interview Sunday on Galei Yisrael radio, clarifying that his comments about Israel's economy were misunderstood.

In a Friday interview with the Economy Channel, Netanyahu had said Israel would need to "organize a bypass economy with the appropriate currencies for that" if faced with banking sanctions. The statement triggered sharp reactions from economists, business leaders and senior civil servants.

"They asked me, so what will happen if there are sanctions? I said we'll deal with sanctions. We can. It's not like they haven't tried. They tried and didn't succeed," Netanyahu explained Sunday. "I answered a question about what we would do in a hypothetical future scenario. I didn't say this is what's going to happen."

He added: "There are about twenty steps we can take and have already taken with great success, and I'm certainly not committing that we'll take this particular step."

Netanyahu pushed back against his critics: "This is another manufactured affair in a series of panic episodes. First of all, the one who has led Israel's economy with tremendous success is your servant together with Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich over the past twenty years, so don't lecture me about economics. Our economy is very strong, the International Monetary Fund has determined that we're expected to grow faster than any other OECD country."

The prime minister's Friday statement drew harsh responses from across Israel's economic establishment. A total of 101 economists, including the governor of the Bank of Israel (Bagatz), senior Finance Ministry officials and bank executives, signed a warning letter about "irreversible damage to the economy following the imposition of economic sanctions on Israel." Among the signatories was Nobel Prize laureate in economics Yoel Mokir.
