According to statement details issued by Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the strike on the Caspian Sea vessel demonstrates what Tehran called an irrational and hostile approach by Kyiv. Iranian officials claimed the vessel was a civilian merchant ship and warned that, under principles of self defense, Iran will not hesitate to protect its national security interests. Conversely, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that defense forces achieved strong results with long range strikes across the Caspian Sea region. Zelenskyy clarified that the targeted vessels were actively engaged in transporting military cargo in cooperation with Iranian authorities. The Security Service of Ukraine confirmed that the ship operated in violation of international sanctions to move equipment between the two nations.
Yevgen Korniychuk, Ukraine's Ambassador to Israel, provided specific details regarding the cargo on board the vessel. "The ship we attacked contained components for drones and missiles that were on their way to Russia, and not civilian goods as Iran claimed," Korniychuk stated. He added that "this is not the first time we have hit such military targets, and of course it can be expected that we will hit them again, this is a legitimate military target for us".
Regarding joint regional security concerns, Ambassador Korniychuk remarked, "We are fighting the same enemy, a different side of the same axis of evil," noting that "we are simply trying to take care of our security".
