Musk’s Shocking Black Eye at White House: What Really Happened?

Elon Musk concluded his role at the Department of Government Efficiency with a White House farewell, sporting a black eye he humorously attributed to his young son. His tenure, marked by significant federal spending cuts, was celebrated as a step toward greater efficiency, with promises of continued impact.

On May 30, Elon Musk appeared at a White House Oval Office sendoff with a noticeable black eye, marking the end of his 130-day tenure as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under President Donald Trump. The bruise sparked immediate curiosity during a press conference, amplified by Fox News reporter Peter Doocy’s reference to a viral story about France’s First Lady slapping her husband. Musk, quick to dispel rumors, quipped, “I wasn’t anywhere near France. I was horsing around with my son, Little X, and told him, ‘Punch me in the face.’ He did, and a 5-year-old can pack a punch!” The comment drew laughter from Trump, who praised Musk’s “colossal change” in Washington, per AP News.

Musk’s black eye was first spotted in photos from a Mars strategy briefing the previous day, Yahoo News reported. During the sendoff, Musk, dressed in a black “Dogefather” t-shirt and DOGE hat, reflected on his efforts to slash federal spending. DOGE achieved $175 billion in savings, about $1,087 per taxpayer, through cuts to grants, contracts, and programs, according to the department’s website, though NPR noted these figures are unverified and likely overstated. House Speaker Mike Johnson confirmed on May 28 that these reductions would inform upcoming congressional budgets, with Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” expected to yield $1.5 trillion more in cuts, per Reuters.

Musk, who initially aimed for $2 trillion in savings, faced setbacks, including legal challenges and cabinet clashes, The New York Times reported. Despite this, he remained defiant, stating, “This is not the end of DOGE only the beginning. The team will grow stronger.” Trump presented Musk with a golden key, signalling continued influence, though Musk plans to refocus on Tesla and SpaceX. When asked if fixing the U.S. government or colonizing Mars was harder, Musk joked, “Mars might be easier,” but insisted DOGE could still hit a trillion-dollar savings goal, per CNBC.
