The Ukrainian President addressed threats of Iranian retaliation following an attack on an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea, emphasizing existing Iranian and North Korean military involvement in the conflict.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated in an interview with Sky News that Iran has already effectively attacked Ukraine by supplying weaponry to Russian forces throughout the ongoing conflict.
Zelensky’s comments followed recent Iranian threats issued after Ukraine targeted an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea. Responding to concerns over potential direct Iranian retaliation, Zelensky emphasized the need for readiness while seeking to avoid further escalation.
Existing Military Involvement
"We must be careful. We must do everything so as not to open a new front in any way", Zelensky said in the interview. "But we must be honest: the Iranians and North Korea have already attacked us. I hope they will not increase these attacks, but we must be ready for anything. We cannot trust these people because from the very beginning, without any escalation from our side, the Iranians provided weapons".
The tension between Kyiv and Tehran expanded after Ukrainian forces hit an Iranian ship. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi addressed the incident, alleging that Ukraine acted on behalf of Israel and warning that Iran would respond harshly to the attack.
Growing Intelligence Cooperation
The exchange follows Zelensky's disclosure over the weekend regarding intelligence cooperation between Moscow and Tehran, which reportedly includes Russia providing satellite imagery to Iran ahead of military operations in the Persian Gulf.
