During The Ukrainian drone attack over Russia's Voronezh region in early July, an incident occurred that left the Russian military deeply embarrassed: an advanced Ka-52 attack helicopter, known as the "Alligator," was shot down by Russian forces in a friendly fire incident.

Fatal Technical Error
During an attempt to repel the Ukrainian drones, a mobile fire group from the Russian army's reserve units launched a Verba shoulder-fired missile. According to expert assessments, the missile's homing head accidentally locked onto the hot engine exhaust of the helicopter, which was significantly more powerful than that of the small drone that was the original target.
The result was fatal. The helicopter crashed, and although the navigator managed to eject and survive with injuries, the aircraft commander was killed instantly. Reports indicate that the pilot's ejection system failed to function properly, preventing him from surviving the crash.
Systemic Training Failures
Russian military blogger Vladimir Romanov did not hold back his criticism of the blunder, claiming that the incident exposes severe deficiencies in the organization and training of mobile air defense forces. According to Romanov, while there are skilled units, there are also "volunteers" gathered from the streets with minimal training who are given weapons and simply shoot toward the target, leading to tragic outcomes.
This is not the first time such an event has occurred; according to reports, this is the fifth time Russia has shot down its own aircraft during the conflict. The incident highlights the pressure and chaos prevailing within the Russian air defense system in the face of the growing drone threat.
