Ukrainian military intelligence has shared evidence with Western media alleging that starving Russian troops in eastern Ukraine have resorted to cannibalism in at least five documented cases during the winter of 2025–2026.

According to a detailed investigation by The Sunday Times (published April 25), Ukrainian intelligence provided intercepted audio recordings, photographs, and messages from Russian officers and soldiers, primarily in the Donetsk region.

Key Alleged Incident

One of the most disturbing cases occurred in November 2025 near Myrnohrad (Donetsk Oblast). A Russian soldier known by the call sign “Khromoy” (meaning “Limpy”), from the 95th Regiment of the 5th Separate Guards Motor Rifle Brigade, allegedly:

Ukrainian sources say they obtained the material from Telegram communications between Russian commanders. An independent expert consulted by the newspaper confirmed that at least some of the images were not AI-generated or manipulated.

Broader Claims

The reports highlight severe logistical problems and poor supply lines in certain Russian frontline units, particularly during the harsh winter months.

The Russian Embassy in London has dismissed the claims as “fabrications” and Ukrainian propaganda. No independent verification of the battlefield incidents has been possible so far.
