An armed group arrived and opened fire on the crowd, resulting in at least 11 people killed; 10 died at the scene, and one succumbed to injuries later at a hospital. Twelve others were injured, including a woman and a minor.

Salamanca Mayor Cesar Prieto confirmed the details in a statement on social media, describing the incident as part of a broader "serious social breakdown" where criminal groups are attempting to intimidate authorities.

No specific suspects have been identified yet, but the region is notorious for violence stemming from ongoing turf wars between rival cartels, including the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel.

These groups have been linked to hundreds of killings, disappearances, and mass shootings in Guanajuato, one of Mexico's most dangerous states.

Local authorities are coordinating with state and federal forces, including prosecutors and Mexico's security agencies, to investigate and apprehend those responsible.

Mayor Prieto has appealed directly to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and the state governor for additional support to restore peace in the area.

Images from the scene show a heavy security presence, including municipal police and national guard units responding in the neighborhood.
