President Donald Trump announced that he will attend the rescheduled White House Correspondents' Dinner on Friday, July 24, following the postponement of the original event due to a violent security breach. The annual gathering, which honors professional journalism and student scholarships, was disrupted in late April when an armed assailant attempted to assassinate the president and members of his cabinet. Trump commended the organizers for moving forward with the event, characterizing the decision as a sign of strength and fortitude.

The rescheduled gala will take place within the presidential ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria on Pennsylvania Avenue, a historic property that previously operated under the Trump hotel brand before its sale in 2022. Organizers confirmed that guests who previously purchased admission tickets for the aborted April event will not be subjected to additional fees for the upcoming July gathering. The new venue features a significantly smaller capacity than the original location, creating a more controlled environment for attendees.

The ballroom at the Waldorf Astoria can accommodate approximately 1,300 seated guests, representing a substantial reduction from the 2,500 person crowd assembled at the Washington Hilton when the shooting occurred. Trump expressed his enthusiasm for the event on social media, writing that the announcement is a very good thing because communities cannot allow lunatics to alter their way of life or disrupt public schedules. He noted that he received a formal invitation to speak from the organization's leadership and accepted the offer.

The president added that he was asked to speak by Weijia Jiang, the president of the White House Correspondents' Association and a prominent television correspondent. Trump joked about his upcoming remarks, stating that he did not know whether he would deliver the same nasty statements regarding certain individuals, but noted that the public would soon find out. He predicted that the dinner would be a highly sought after ticket, highlighting his personal history with the physical building and the ballroom infrastructure.

The initial April event was halted when an individual identified as Cole Tomas Allen forced his way past an outer security checkpoint while carrying a rifle. Allen opened fire during the intrusion, wounding a Secret Service agent whose protective vest successfully prevented fatal injuries. Federal investigators later recovered a written manifesto from the suspect detailing a premeditated plot to assassinate the president and multiple high ranking cabinet members. The suspect remains held in federal custody without bail while awaiting a formal trial.

The association leadership emphasized that the century old dinner serves as an essential celebration of a free press and its foundational role within a constitutional democracy. President Weijia Jiang informed members that the organization refused to let an act of violence have the final word, especially during the milestone anniversary of the nation's founding. She clarified that the upcoming July gathering would feature significantly enhanced safety measures, new access procedures, and a much more intimate environment to ensure the absolute security of all participants.
