At least eight Buddhist monks were killed and 13 others injured when an 11-year-old boy driving his parents’ pickup truck plowed into a religious procession in northeastern Thailand on Thursday morning.

The incident occurred in Mueang district, Mukdahan province, as a group of approximately 34 monks on a traditional tudong (walking pilgrimage) made their way along a main road toward Ubon Ratchathani.

According to police, the boy took his parents’ vehicle without permission. He lost control and crashed into the monks who were walking in the procession. Several monks were killed instantly, while others succumbed to their injuries in hospital.

Mukdahan City Police Chief Prayut Ruanthongkam confirmed the death toll and said the child has been taken into custody. He is being treated under juvenile justice procedures. Authorities are also investigating the parents for possible negligence.

Local officials and rescue teams rushed to the scene, where chaotic images showed injured monks and bystanders receiving emergency care. At least 10 of the injured are reported to be in serious condition.

This tragic accident has shocked the local Buddhist community and highlights concerns over road safety and child supervision during major religious events in the region.

The Thai government and religious authorities have expressed condolences to the families of the victims. No further details on the boy’s condition or exact cause of the loss of control have been released.

The story is developing.
