First military execution in six decades

Trump weighs live broadcast of execution

President considering whether to televise firing-squad execution of Nidal Hasan, convicted of killing 13 and wounding 32 in 2009 attack on Texas military base

Trump Weighs Live Broadcast of Fort Hood Shooter's Execution

President Donald Trump has not yet decided whether to broadcast live the execution of Nidal Hasan, a former Army major convicted of murdering 13 people and wounding 32 others in a shooting rampage at Fort Hood, Texas.

According to Fox News, the execution by firing squad is scheduled for December 3. If carried out, it will be the first military execution in the United States since 1961.

"There are two options: not to show it and to show it," Trump told reporters at the White House. He said broadcasting the execution might deter others from committing similar acts. "Ultimately I'll make a decision," the president said, adding that he is aware of the military's position on the matter.

Trump approved the use of a firing squad following a recommendation from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Vice President J.D. Vance said he does not know whether the execution will be televised, and made clear that if it is broadcast, he will not watch it.

Hasan, a former military psychiatrist, was convicted of the November 2009 shooting attack at Fort Hood in which 13 people were killed and 32 wounded. If the execution proceeds, it will be the first in the U.S. military in more than six decades, and the first by firing squad since 1945.
