A television reporter became part of the story he was covering Thursday when he jumped into floodwaters in Queensland, Australia, and rescued a driver whose vehicle was sinking rapidly beneath the surface.
Will Mari, a correspondent for Australia's public broadcaster ABC, had arrived in the town of Morayfield with camerawoman Liz Pickering to report on severe flooding caused by heavy rains across the region. As they prepared their coverage, an SUV attempted to cross the flooded roadway, became stuck in the current, and began drifting and sinking.
Mari immediately called emergency services, but when he realized the vehicle was going under and the driver was struggling to escape, he made a split-second decision. He and another man who was at the scene entered the water and swam toward the submerged car.
