The Pentagon is deploying thousands of additional sailors and Marines to the Middle East as the Trump administration ramps up its "maximum pressure" campaign to force a definitive end to the weeks-long conflict with Iran, according to a report by the Washington Post.

The strategic surge comes as a fragile two-week ceasefire nears its April 22 expiration date, with U.S. officials signaling that the military is prepared for a rapid escalation if ongoing negotiations falter.

A Massive Infusion of Firepower

The new deployments will bring the total U.S. personnel in the region to approximately 60,000. Key assets moving into the theater include:

Enforcing the Blockade

The surge is designed to provide the muscle for the maritime blockade President Trump announced Sunday. The operation aims to completely choke off Iranian oil exports and imports, pressuring Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and permanently dismantle its nuclear program.

Washington Post added:

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that the President is keeping "all options on the table," predicting that Iran’s "desperation for a deal will only increase" as the blockade takes hold.

So far, the blockade has seen high-seas tension but no combat. In the first 24 hours, U.S. warships intercepted six merchant vessels, all of which complied with orders to return to Iranian ports. However, experts warn that "boarding operations", where Navy SEALs or Marines seize non-compliant ships, remain a high-risk flashpoint.

"Elimination" Warnings and Ground Contingencies

President Trump issued a stark warning on social media, cautioning Iranian forces against interfering with U.S. personnel.

“If any of these ships come anywhere close to our BLOCKADE, they will be immediately ELIMINATED... It is quick and brutal,” the President wrote, referencing the military's aggressive tactics against maritime drug traffickers.

Beyond the blockade, military planners are reportedly preparing for the possibility of ground operations on Iranian soil.

Options being discussed include:

The Diplomatic Stakes

Negotiations led by Vice President JD Vance faltered over the weekend, though President Trump remains optimistic, telling Fox Business that the war is "very close" to being over.

While the blockade exerts massive economic pressure on Tehran, analysts warn of domestic consequences, including rising global gas prices and the potential for American casualties should the U.S. transition from a sea-based blockade to a ground-based intervention.
