A major triumph for Israel’s U23 men's fencing team at the European Championships in Tallinn, Estonia, was marred by an unfortunate political incident. During the medal ceremony on Saturday, members of the Swiss team, who won the silver medal, turned their backs to the flags during the playing of Israel’s national anthem, "Hatikvah."

Representing Israel were Alon Sarid, Fyodor Khaperski, Yonatan Masika, and Itamar Tavor, alongside coach Alexander Ivanov and the professional staff. The team, while celebrating their gold medal, expressed regret that a sporting achievement became a platform for political hostility.

"Sport should bring people together, not divide them," a source within the Israel Fencing Association said.

Following intervention by Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the president of the Swiss Fencing Association issued an apology, expressing regret over the athletes' conduct during the medal ceremony.

He emphasized that the action had not been discussed or approved beforehand, and that the association would address the matter with the athletes upon their return to Switzerland, with disciplinary measures being considered.

Israeli Triumph on the Piste

Israel, initially ranked seventh, automatically advanced to the Round of 16, where they defeated host nation Estonia 45–38. In the quarterfinals, they stunned second-seeded Sweden with a dominant 45–33 victory, and later overcame a strong Italian team with the same score to reach the final.

In the gold medal match, the Israeli team defeated Switzerland 45–34, securing a historic win.

In an official statement, the Israel Fencing Association said: "This is an outstanding achievement that showcases the skills, sportsmanship, and determination of our athletes. Congratulations to Alexander Ivanov for his inspiring leadership. A great moment of Israeli pride — well done to everyone involved."

Political Reactions

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar congratulated the team, stating: "Congratulations to Israel’s U23 fencing team for winning the gold medal at the European Championships. Congratulations also to the Italian team for winning the bronze medal. Shame on the Swiss team for their disgraceful and embarrassing behavior, which dishonored the country they were meant to represent."

Despite the controversy, the Israeli team’s achievement remains a significant milestone.
