France on Fire

Macron Blames Middle East Conflict for Riots

In a national address, French President Emmanuel Macron said the riots stemmed from a Middle East conflict France did not start and vowed that those who tried to bring down the Republic will pay the price.

French President Emmanuel Macron used a national address on the riots that swept his country to trace the unrest to an international conflict in the Middle East, one he said France did not initiate. He also issued a warning: "Those who tried to bring down the Republic will pay the price." The weekend's violence reached France's Jewish community. On Sunday, a synagogue in Paris was broken into and vandalized.

The president drew a line between two groups in the streets. He described those who marched peacefully against the high cost of living as legitimate protesters.

In Marseille, journalist Paul Amar said on CNews that rioters burned and vandalized Jewish-owned businesses while leaving Muslim-owned shops on the same street untouched. He said the attacks appeared to have been planned in advance.

Saturday, October 17, began as a nationwide day of protest against the rising cost of living and declining public services. It ended in looting, arson and clashes with police. The Interior Ministry counted 550,000 marchers. The CGT union put the figure at 800,000.

In Limoges, rioters set fire to the 19th-century city hall. The city halls in Lille and Marseille were also damaged. Stores were looted in Bordeaux and Nice, and some of the world's most prestigious luxury stores, including Dior, were among those hit.
