Waiting on the crown prince

Netanyahu Seeks Saudi Nod for Yemen Strikes

Netanyahu is using US mediators to request Saudi permission to strike the Houthis • Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has been reluctant | Israel is unlikely to enter the war without his approval

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is working through US mediators to win Saudi Arabia's permission for Israeli strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen, a diplomatic source told Haaretz on Monday. Under the plan, Israel would join the Saudis in the decade-old conflict and use that cooperation to build toward a future normalization agreement.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has been reluctant to allow Israeli intervention in the war. He also serves as the kingdom's prime minister, so Israel is unlikely to receive permission to join the fight without his approval.

Netanyahu has repeatedly declared normalization with Saudi Arabia a goal. In recent election campaign statements, he has pledged to prevent the establishment of a Palestinian state.

The request follows Saturday's Houthi missile strike on Saudi Arabia's King Khalid International Airport. Saudi authorities initially identified 12 dead, and more than 300 people were wounded. Reuters later put the toll at 13 after an Indian national died of his injuries. Netanyahu has sent condolences to Saudi Arabia even though the two countries have no diplomatic ties.

Saudi officials told the Wall Street Journal that the kingdom's Patriot interceptor stocks are running short after Houthi fire hit the airport on both Saturday and Sunday.
