Bloc first, then opposition

Netanyahu to Seek Unity Partners in Opposition

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will look to the opposition for unity government partners, but only after he first consults the parties of his own political bloc.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu intends to turn to the opposition bloc to find partners for a unity government, journalist Amit Segal reported. Before making that approach, the prime minister will hold a round of consultations with the parties in his own political bloc.

The move follows the election for the 26th Knesset, held on October 27.

The idea of a broad government has also drawn interest from the United States. On Wednesday, President Trump said he would examine whether he could help bring about a unity government in Israel.

The opposition has been weighing a different path. On Wednesday, Democrats leader Yair Golan told his opposition partners that a change government could be formed with Arab parties taking part.

On the morning after the vote, i24 presenter Eliraz Sade made the case for a unity arrangement led by Netanyahu.

"The only solution is to break campaign promises and create a draft government under Netanyahu, with Eisenkot as defense minister," Sade said.

In September, Gadi Eisenkot, Naftali Bennett, Avigdor Liberman and Yair Golan met at the Tel Aviv home of opposition leader Yair Lapid and released their first joint photograph. They did not agree on a candidate for prime minister.
