Google is putting together a team of engineers in Israel to develop dedicated processors for robots and autonomous systems, and has begun recruiting specialists for the project.
The team is led by Guy Kaminitz, who previously served as vice president of research and development at Hailo, the Israeli AI chip maker.
The processors are built around Edge AI, a technology that runs artificial intelligence tasks on the device itself rather than sending data to the cloud. Google already employs roughly 700 engineers on chips and computing infrastructure in Tel Aviv and Haifa.
The main target market is civilian robotics, though the same technology could also serve drones, autonomous intelligence systems and similar applications. Google has not disclosed the project's budget or when the first chips are expected.
