A home security camera in Los Angeles recorded an unusual wildlife encounter early one morning: a coyote confronting and driving away a bear that had approached a residential property, apparently to protect a younger coyote nearby.
Richard Horowitz, a resident of the Tarzana neighborhood, received an alert from his home security system around 2:30 a.m. When he reviewed the footage, he was stunned by what he saw. "I couldn't believe what I was seeing," he said.
The video shows a bear approaching the driveway path when a large coyote suddenly positions itself between the bear and the street, advancing toward the larger animal repeatedly. The bear gradually retreats as a smaller coyote watches the confrontation unfold from the roadway.
"The larger coyote was really trying to keep the bear away from the smaller one," Horowitz explained. "Multiple times it moved toward the bear just to protect it. I thought to myself, 'Wow, I can't wait to show this to someone.'"
The bear eventually gave up and fled to a neighboring yard. Despite the unusual confrontation, the animals did not engage in physical combat and neither was injured.
