Jews targeted in more than half of all verified hate crimes in the city despite comprising only 10% of the population, according to NYPD data

New York City experienced a significant surge in hate crimes during 2026, with Jewish residents bearing the brunt of the violence, according to newly released statistics from the New York Police Department.

The data reveals that overall hate crimes in the city climbed approximately 15.8% during the first eight months of the year compared to the same period in 2025—rising from 367 incidents to 425.

Antisemitic hate crimes specifically increased by roughly 8% and accounted for more than half of all verified hate crime cases citywide. This disproportionate targeting is particularly stark given that Jews represent only about one-tenth of New York City's population.

The statistics follow a series of antisemitic incidents throughout the city, including the stabbing of a Jewish man near a synagogue on the Upper West Side in July. In response to the escalating violence, the U.S. Department of Justice announced it is actively investigating antisemitic crimes in New York. "The Department of Justice takes antisemitism very seriously," said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who has faced criticism from Jewish leaders and activists over his sharp rhetoric against Israel, maintains that he treats antisemitism with severity and has significantly increased budgets dedicated to combating hate crimes.
