"I May Never Share Why I Divorced"

Two years after her split from Hanan Ben Ari, the writer opens up about creating in the shadow of divorce, the pain, and the unanswered questions: A woman without a man walks incomplete in the world

Hadassah Ben Ari

Author and creator Hadassah Ben Ari has shared a raw and complex reflection on the emotional process she's been navigating since her divorce, and on writing a new book that grapples with precisely these questions.

"Why do people get divorced. I'm asking this question seriously," Ben Ari opened. "G-d is my witness that you could set a Guinness record for the time it took me to say the word divorced. Divorcing. Divorce. Quite a few people wrote to me, well, maybe you'll write a book about divorcées too. Oh G-d, I thought. Why would you think that, what do I even have to say. Why do we have to write about every pain."

Despite her initial reluctance, Ben Ari described how she found herself drawn back to the keyboard: "I found myself following a brazen hand that pulled me to the keyboard and started writing a book that personally makes me laugh oceans and also cry, and at its center is a divorced woman. She's not connected to me, of course. She doesn't tell my story, of course. But she asks the questions I ask myself: what is love. How do you walk in love inside a weary world and is there a path that doesn't go through childhood wounds and other pains."

Ben Ari also addressed life under the cameras and the constant labeling following the separation: "Even two years later, every sentence of mine becomes a headline. I'm in a golden cage where the enlightened world continues to tag my work and creativity as the work and creativity of a divorced-woman, as if my words and my books and my femininity can't stand on their own. I despise this, move on! And at the same time I must admit within the walls of my heart how much truth there is in it, that a woman without a man walks incomplete in the world."
