In a significant gesture of outreach to America's Haredi community, President Donald Trump's personal Jewish liaison traveled to Kiryas Joel last week to present the Satmar Rebbe with an official presidential declaration bearing Trump's signature.

Martin Marks, who serves as the administration's primary connection to Orthodox Jewish communities nationwide, arrived at the Rebbe's residence in Monroe, New York, carrying what he described as the "American Jewish Heritage Month Proclamation for 2026." The document, signed personally by President Trump, outlines the administration's commitment to protecting religious freedom and combating antisemitism on college campuses and in educational institutions across the United States.

The proclamation includes direct quotations from President George Washington's historic 1790 letter to the Jewish community of Newport, Rhode Island, in which the first president affirmed that the new American government "gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance." Trump's declaration builds on that foundation, pledging federal action against hate crimes and antisemitic incidents while calling on all Americans to recognize the Jewish tradition of Shabbat as a day devoted to rest and gratitude.

During the private audience, the Satmar Rebbe engaged Marks in an extended discussion regarding the challenges facing Haredi communities in the United States, particularly concerning educational autonomy, religious accommodations, and the needs of rapidly growing Orthodox populations in New York and New Jersey. Sources familiar with the meeting indicated the Rebbe conveyed specific concerns about federal and state policies affecting yeshiva education and communal infrastructure.

The visit represents a continuation of the Trump administration's intensive cultivation of Orthodox Jewish support, a constituency that has proven increasingly aligned with Republican politics in recent election cycles. The Satmar community, while traditionally maintaining a complex relationship with political engagement due to its anti-Zionist theological stance, has nonetheless become more active in American civic affairs, particularly on issues affecting religious liberty and educational policy.

Marks concluded the meeting by receiving a blessing from the Rebbe, a customary gesture in Hasidic protocol that signals mutual respect between religious and political leadership.

State Comptroller Pays Separate Visit

In a separate development the same week, New York State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli traveled to Kiryas Joel for his own audience with the Satmar Rebbe. DiNapoli, who serves as the state's chief fiscal officer and oversees pension fund investments exceeding $250 billion, was received warmly by the Rebbe in what observers described as a continuation of the comptroller's longstanding engagement with New York's diverse religious communities.

The back-to-back visits by both a senior Trump administration official and a prominent New York State Democrat underscore the growing political significance of the Satmar community, which has expanded dramatically in recent decades and now represents a substantial voting bloc in Orange County and parts of Brooklyn.

The timing of these high-level visits comes as the two branches of the Satmar dynasty have taken unprecedented steps toward reconciliation following decades of bitter division, potentially consolidating the community's political influence even further. The Kiryas Joel court, led by Rabbi Aharon Teitelbaum, and the Williamsburg faction under Rabbi Zalman Leib Teitelbaum, have recently cooperated in dividing their late grandfather's estate, a move many interpret as signaling a thaw in relations.

Neither the White House nor the New York State Comptroller's office issued public statements regarding the meetings, consistent with the typically private nature of such religious-political consultations in the Haredi world.
