CIA Director John Ratcliffe made an unexpected visit to Moscow yesterday, meeting with senior Russian officials in what sources describe as a high-stakes diplomatic mission. According to individuals familiar with the discussions, Ratcliffe pressed the Kremlin to reduce its relationship with Iran and cautioned that Moscow's response to expanding U.S. sanctions could influence Israel's strategic posture toward Ukraine.
During hours of talks with his Russian counterparts and other senior officials, Ratcliffe conveyed Washington's desire to see Russia pull back from its partnership with Tehran, particularly regarding military technology and development cooperation. He specifically noted that the United States is aware Russia has provided Iran with components that could enhance Tehran's drone capabilities, and that Moscow has assisted Iranian efforts to identify targets for attacks on American facilities.
Ratcliffe also warned that Russia could find itself caught in the widening net of U.S. sanctions on Iran. Following the U.S. Treasury Secretary's declaration of "economic warfare" against the Iranian regime, the CIA chief cautioned Russian officials against "overreacting" if they experience economic fallout from these measures. He further indicated that if current patterns continue, Washington might encourage Israel to strengthen its security relationship with Ukraine and expand military cooperation with Kyiv—a prospect that would complicate Russia's strategic calculations in the region.
