The disaster struck heavily at Gyirong Port on the Chinese side, where torrential waters inundated key crossing infrastructure. The sudden wave severed main roads, power supply lines, and telecommunication networks across the immediate vicinity. Emergency agencies in China reported hundreds missing around the port, while Nepalese authorities launched search operations for missing residents, workers, tourists, and security forces.
Initial satellite imagery indicates that an immense ice rock avalanche or glacier collapse higher in the mountain range likely triggered the sudden surge into the river system. Technical experts continue to investigate the precise cause of the collapse. Emergency management officials issued ongoing warnings to nearby communities, noting that secondary blockages from upstream debris could release further flooding downstream.
