A massive search and rescue operation is underway in Southern Morocco after two American service members vanished during the African Lion 2026 military exercises, as reported by the Sun.
The soldiers were reported missing on May 2 near the Cap Draa Training Area, a rugged desert expanse close to the city of Tan-Tan. U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) confirmed the disappearance Sunday morning, stating that all available resources have been diverted to the search.
Large-Scale Rescue Effort
The search operation has rapidly expanded to include:
- Aerial Surveillance: Reconnaissance aircraft and drones scanning the vast desert terrain.
- Ground Teams: U.S. and Moroccan units combing the training area.
- Maritime Assets: Coast guard and naval vessels patrolling the nearby Atlantic coastline.
"Our focus is on the service members involved and their families," AFRICOM said in an official statement. "Additional information will be provided as it becomes available."
Authorities have not yet specified whether the soldiers were on foot, in a vehicle, or engaged in a specific training maneuver at the time they lost contact.
