Britain is proceeding with its intention to impose sanctions, a process expected to take 6–9 months, which led to the consulate closure. In exchange for allowing a small number of diplomats to remain in the building and reducing the British diplomatic presence in Jerusalem, the planned expulsion of Israeli diplomats from London will be canceled and negotiations will take place. The UK hopes a new government will restore the consulate to its former status.

Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar announced that Israel and the United Kingdom have reached an understanding on closing the British Consulate in East Jerusalem. The consulate ended operations Thursday, with the Consul General and 20 diplomats concluding their assignments and departing Israel. Under the agreement, Israel will allow London to maintain a seven-member task force in the British-owned building with significantly reduced activities. Both governments will continue dialogue on the matter.
Following discussions with the Israeli government, the UK Consulate General will not close but will be renamed the British Mission, effective today. The UK will work to rebuild its presence in the coming months and will not take retaliatory measures as long as discussions continue in good faith. The UK reaffirmed its commitment to the sanctions it announced on September 8.
