"Immediate Investigation Ordered": IDF Issues Rare Statement

The Israel Defense Forces confirmed this afternoon (Monday) that the Chief of Staff has ordered an immediate investigation into reports that emerged from Gaza earlier in the day. According to Hamas health authorities, at least 14 people were killed in an Israeli strike at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, among them four well-known media figures, including a photographer working with Reuters.

IDF Statement

In an urgent press release, the IDF Spokesperson stated:

“The Chief of Staff has instructed that an initial inquiry be conducted as soon as possible. The IDF regrets any harm to uninvolved individuals and does not, under any circumstances, deliberately target journalists as such. The IDF takes extensive measures to minimize harm to civilians, while maintaining the security of our forces.”

The Gaza Reports

Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry claimed that those killed in the strike included:

Hossam Masri, a photographer reportedly employed by Reuters.
Mohammad Salameh, said to have worked for Al Jazeera.
Maryam Abu Daka, described as a journalist.
Moaz Abu Taha, another figure presented as a media worker.

Palestinian outlets reported that the strike hit the fourth floor of the hospital twice, with the second strike occurring after emergency responders arrived at the scene.

They further alleged that the incident began with a so-called “suicide drone” exploding on the external staircase of the Yassin building, which houses the hospital’s emergency department.

As of now, the IDF has not confirmed the details of the incident beyond its commitment to investigate. Israeli officials maintain that many Hamas operatives have long used civilian and medical facilities in Gaza as cover for military activity, a strategy that places journalists and civilians directly in harm’s way.
