Celine Dion Returns to Stage After Rare Disease Battle

A moment fans worldwide had been waiting for finally arrived this past weekend in Paris: Celine Dion took the stage again, unable to hold back her tears. The Canadian superstar opened her 16-show series at the Plenitude Arena in the City of Light, marking her biggest comeback since she was forced to step away from the spotlight due to her health condition.

"I promised myself I wouldn't cry," Dion told thousands of fans who greeted her with thunderous applause. "I'm not keeping my promises. But I'm so happy to see you all. I missed you." She later thanked the audience for their support and patience over the years: "I promised to come back, to come back to the stage. So here I am, singing for you and singing for me, singing live. I am everything I am because you loved me."

Fighting a Rare Disease

Dion's return to the stage comes after particularly difficult years. In December 2022, the singer revealed she had been diagnosed with Stiff Person Syndrome, a rare neurological and autoimmune disease that causes muscle stiffness and spasms, among other symptoms. The condition, which affects one in a million people, significantly impacted her ability to sing and perform.

According to Dr. Shahar Shelly, head of the neuromuscular diseases unit in the neurology department at Rambam Medical Center, this is a rare disease of the motor system characterized by involuntary muscle contractions in the center of the body so severe they cause intense muscle pain. In extreme cases, the syndrome can lead to complete paralysis.

Following the diagnosis, Dion canceled all her tour dates, including a planned performance in Israel that was scheduled for May 2023. "I'm so sorry to disappoint you again, I'm working very hard to regain my strength," she wrote in a message to her fans at the time.

Paris — A Second Home

The choice of Paris as the first stop for her comeback is no accident. For Dion, Paris is a second home, the place where she established herself as an international star in both French and English. More than 33,000 people are expected to attend each show in the new tour series.

Approximately 60% of the show is expected to be devoted to her French repertoire, including songs written and composed for her by Jean-Jacques Goldman, among them "Pour que tu m'aimes encore" and "J'irai où tu iras". Even before taking the stage, the singer warned fans with a smile to arrive in comfortable shoes because the show is expected to last more than two hours.

Demand for tickets has been enormous, according to data from LiveTix. Ticket prices have risen significantly in recent months and now start at around 900 euros. Approximately 1,500 Israelis are expected to attend the entire tour series, testament to the great love her local fans have for the singer.

"I Promised to Come Back"

For Dion, at least according to what she said on stage, this is much more than a professional comeback. After years when it wasn't at all clear whether she would be able to perform again, she stood once more before an audience of tens of thousands and summed up the moment simply: "I promised to come back to the stage. So here I am."

The singer, who has held a glorious career spanning decades and won prestigious Grammy Awards, including for the song "Beauty and the Beast" which she performed in 1992, once again proved her determination and strength. The Paris audience witnessed not just a great singer, but a woman who overcame a serious illness and returned to where she belongs, on stage, before her fans.
