IDF Soldier to Receive Top Honour
Against all odds: Soldier with Autism chosen for Israel’s highest military award
A 23-year-old IDF soldier on the autism spectrum will receive Israel’s prestigious President’s Award of Excellence for his outstanding service and dedication, particularly during wartime. His recognition highlights the success of Israel’s Inclusion in Uniform program, which enables people with disabilities to serve meaningfully in the military.

In a heartfelt recognition of determination, service, and inclusion, Israeli President Isaac Herzog will present the prestigious President’s Award of Excellence to a 23-year-old IDF soldier on the autism spectrum, known publicly only as ‘A’. The honor will be bestowed during this year’s Independence Day celebrations and marks a significant acknowledgment of the vital contributions made by soldiers of all abilities.
‘A’ serves as a technical and logistical support soldier in the Israel Defense Forces and is a participant in Israel Elwyn’s “Inclusion in Uniform” Program, an initiative designed to integrate young adults with disabilities into meaningful roles in military service. Since joining the IDF in 2022, ‘A’ has taken on a wide range of responsibilities, providing essential support to the army’s operational needs. His dedication intensified following the Hamas-led October 7th attacks, when he voluntarily increased his workload, requested more shifts, and chose to remain on base despite being eligible to go home due to his condition.
“I’m so proud to serve in the army like everyone else. I love my role and know it’s important. It’s very moving to know that I succeeded and that I was chosen for the President’s Award on Independence Day,” ‘A’ shared.
David Marcu, President of Israel Elwyn, praised ‘A’ as a powerful example of perseverance and inclusion. “This young soldier is a remarkable example of the human spirit’s ability to overcome barriers and proof that disability should never prevent people from achieving their dreams and fully participate in and contribute to society. Particularly during these challenging days for the people of Israel, the contribution of each and every individual to the war effort and the defense of our beloved country is something that should be warmly saluted.”
‘A’s commanding officer echoed the sentiment, highlighting the soldier’s character and dedication: “'A' is an outstanding soldier who doesn’t let his disability define him—he defines his own path. He’s diligent, capable, and professional. He’s an integral part of our team, working as an equal among equals. He is highly respected by his commanders and peers and serves as a daily inspiration. He insists on being treated like every other soldier—and rightly so.”
Launched in 2021 through a partnership between Israel’s Ministry of Welfare and Social Affairs, the IDF, and the Bnai Zion Foundation, Israel Elwyn’s Inclusion in Uniform program aims to open doors for people with disabilities, allowing them to contribute equally and meaningfully to Israeli society through military service. ‘A’s recognition stands as a testament to the success of the initiative and to the growing inclusivity of the IDF.
