On Monday, the IDF’s General Staff Forum marked Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day with a powerful seminar at Yad Vashem and locations throughout Jerusalem, led by Chief of the General Staff, Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir. The gathering commemorated eighty years since the end of World War II and served as a solemn tribute to the six million Jews who perished, while highlighting the spirit of revival embodied by the modern State of Israel and its defense forces.

The day began with opening remarks by Dani Dayan, Chairman of Yad Vashem, who welcomed the military delegation and emphasized the importance of remembrance in ensuring the lessons of the Holocaust are not forgotten. Rabbi Tamir Granot followed with a moving lecture on rising from pain and tragedy to embrace life, resilience, and renewal—a message that resonated with the commanders in attendance.

One of the day’s emotional highlights was a personal meeting with Holocaust survivor Lea Balint. As part of the “A Flower for a Survivor” initiative, Balint was honored with a special certificate recognizing her story of endurance and strength. Limor Livnat, Chair of the Foundation for the Welfare of Holocaust Victims, was present for the occasion, adding to the significance of the event.

The officers also toured Yad Vashem’s “Book of Names” exhibit, guided by Natalie Elgrabli, who focused on the theme of hope as a sustaining value throughout the Holocaust and beyond. The day concluded with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the Hall of Names, paying tribute to the memory of the fallen.

In his address, Chief of Staff LTG Eyal Zamir reflected on the symbolism of the IDF in relation to the Holocaust: “The IDF is the answer to the Holocaust. From the ashes rose the State of Israel, and from it rose the IDF – the defending army of the Jewish people. It is a strong, moral force that ensures we are never again without protection.”

Zamir added, “The Holocaust was a story not only of destruction but also of resilience, courage, and revival. The IDF is the guardian of that revival and the promise that 'Never Again' is not just a phrase, but a commitment.”

He concluded, “We will continue to defend the State of Israel, the Jewish people, and future generations. May the memory of the fallen be blessed.”
