IDF Recruitment Expansion: Military Faces Manpower Crisis

Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir received a recognition award from the State Employees Union at a ceremony held Thursday honoring military and security forces. The event, chaired by union head Ofir Alkalai, also included the participation of IDF Manpower Directorate head Dado Bar Kalifa and other officials.

Accepting the award, Zamir emphasized that the honor belonged not to him personally but to the hundreds of thousands of soldiers and commanders serving in both regular and reserve duty. "I stand here solely as the commander of those who carry the security of the state on their shoulders day by day, hour by hour," he said. He also toured an exhibition at the venue showcasing tributes to IDF chiefs of staff throughout the years.

"This shield belongs to the reservists who left home, family, and career, and showed up out of pure dedication," Zamir stated. "It belongs to the families who provide them with steadfast support, and to the fallen and wounded who paid the heaviest price of all. I am merely the messenger of an entire army that operates with devotion, determination, and humility, and I accept this recognition in their name and by their merit."

The IDF chief noted that Israel has been engaged in an unprecedented, prolonged, multi-front campaign for over a thousand days. "Throughout this war, we have severely damaged the capabilities of all our enemies, each individually and all together," he continued. "In this fateful campaign that began with the failure of October 7th, we removed real existential threats that had been built against us for years. We proved that the IDF's long arm is powerful, determined, and reaches everywhere to strike those who seek our harm. We fundamentally changed our security doctrine, there is no ignoring and no containment, there is removal of threats in advance. We are in a continuous learning process, drawing lessons and implementing them."

Zamir also addressed the current crisis facing the military, warning that "we must enlarge the IDF, expand the pool of those serving, and adapt it with advanced organizational structures and capabilities in order to meet its expanding missions. Alongside this, our supreme duty is to care for IDF personnel: conscripts, career soldiers, reservists, and IDF civilian employees, who are the foundation of our strength and the secret of our power."

He concluded with a reference to the Rosh Hashanah prayer: "Joy to your land and gladness to your city, these ancient words serve as our moral and operational compass. The joy in our land and the gladness in our city are not taken for granted, they are earned day by day through courage, determination, and endless devotion."
