Changing One Khamenei for Another: Lapid Warns Against a "Hollow" Victory in Iran
Opposition Leader Yair Lapid has warned that military achievements must be translated into a reality-altering diplomatic success, rather than just replacing one Khamenei with another.

Israeli Opposition Leader Yair Lapid issued a stern warning on Wednesday evening, cautioning the government against ending the current war without securing a permanent strategic change in the Middle East. While acknowledging that the IDF and the American military have achieved "unprecedented" military successes under the most supportive US President in history, Lapid argued that these gains will be squandered if they do not result in a "reality-changing diplomatic achievement." He specifically criticized the notion that the war could conclude with the regime intact or with its core capabilities merely damaged rather than destroyed. For Lapid, the goal must be the total dismantling of the threat, rather than a superficial change of leadership in Tehran.
The Nuclear and Missile Threat
A primary concern for Lapid is the survival of the Iranian nuclear and ballistic missile programs. He stated clearly that the war cannot end as long as these "existential threats" remain even partially functional. "The war cannot end with us simply replacing one Khamenei with another Khamenei," Lapid declared, referencing the transition of power from Ali to Mojtaba Khamenei. He argued that as long as the nuclear facilities are not completely eradicated and the missile industry remains capable of rebuilding, the victory is only temporary. Furthermore, he noted that the situation on the northern border must also be resolved, insisting that the war cannot conclude while Hezbollah terrorists remain positioned south of the Litani River, threatening Israeli communities.
Critiquing Netanyahu’s Promises
Lapid also took the opportunity to critique Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s past handling of security threats. He expressed deep skepticism regarding the Prime Minister's tendency to declare "eternal victory" through media statements. "The war cannot end with the Prime Minister once again promising us that he has eliminated all threats forever and ever," Lapid said. He specifically pointed back to the conclusion of "Operation With Lions" in June 2025, where similar promises were made, only for the current, even more devastating war to erupt months later. Lapid’s message is that the Israeli public cannot settle for slogans and must see the physical destruction of the enemy's ability to wage war.
A Historic Crossroads
According to the Opposition Leader, the current alignment of Israeli military power and American diplomatic backing represents a historic crossroads that must not be missed. He believes that if Israel settles for a ceasefire before the core objectives are met, it will be a "strategic failure for generations." As Netanyahu convenes a limited security consultation with senior ministers and security chiefs at 8:00 PM tonight, Lapid is positioning himself as the voice of caution, demanding that the military pressure continue until the regime in Iran is either toppled or rendered permanently harmless.
