Bennett: PM will be Liberman or me

Former PM Naftali Bennett tells supporters there's zero meaning to the number of mandates and suggests he or Liberman will lead next government, remarks stir fury in Eisenkot's camp hours before voting begins

Naftali Bennett

A recording of former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett is drawing sharp reactions across the opposition bloc hours before polls open, with particular anger in the camp of Gadi Eisenkot, head of the Yashar party.

In footage circulating on social media and shared by political analyst Amit Segal among others, Bennett is seen refusing to commit to accepting the voters' decision and the size of the parties the day after the election. "Maybe we'll agree that the prime minister will be Liberman or me," Bennett says in the clip, adding a line that has set off a storm: "There's zero meaning to the number of mandates."

The remarks are stirring deep resentment in the political system, especially given that Bennett has already set an unprecedented political precedent when he was appointed Prime Minister of Israel while heading a party with only six mandates. His current statement is being seen as another crack in the bloc's attempts to coordinate ahead of forming the next government.
