Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a sweeping denial Tuesday of reports that the political leadership intends to remove IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir from his post after the upcoming elections, calling the claim "a complete fabrication."
The denial came in response to reports circulating in Israeli media that senior political figures plan to dismiss Zamir if the coalition secures another majority in the April vote. A statement from Katz's office said there is no truth to the reports.
"The reports published this evening about an intention to fire Chief of Staff Zamir are a fabrication and a complete lie, exactly like other lies in the security sphere that were spread in the last day with the aim of harming the Likud ahead of the elections," the statement read.
"I recommended Zamir's appointment to the position of Chief of Staff. We are working together for the security of the State of Israel, with historic and unprecedented achievements, and that is how I intend to continue in the future," Katz said.
Zamir was appointed Chief of Staff in January 2023 on the recommendation of then-Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. Katz, who replaced Gallant in November 2024, has publicly backed Zamir's leadership throughout the war.
