Iran, Russia fueling France protests

Researchers tell The Times they estimate Iran and Russia are encouraging the violent protests in France through social-media influence operations aimed at escalating tensions in Europe

Destruction and looting in France

Iran and Russia are working to encourage the violent protests in France through social-media influence campaigns, The Times reported Wednesday, citing multiple researchers. According to the report, French President Emmanuel Macron blocked publication of a government report documenting Iranian interference in order to avoid a confrontation with Tehran.

Intelligence and police officials in France claimed that foreign influencers published content over the past month that "encouraged tensions" in the protests, the report said. Senior officials in the French government rejected the allegations, however, and at this stage there is no proof that foreign actors triggered the start of the protest wave.

Historian David Colon said Iran, Russia and Algeria are working to "escalate tensions" in Europe, with Iran proving especially effective because it managed to connect with groups identified with the far left. French-Iranian journalist Emmanuel Razavi added that Iranian intelligence operatives encouraged far-left activists to promote the Palestinian issue, linking the waving of Palestinian flags at protests in France to those efforts. He also accused Iran of running agents who paid cash to young people to riot at protests in Paris.
