US President Donald Trump left the door open Monday evening to a deal with Iran, hours before midterm elections, claiming that Tehran is seeking an agreement following severe military and economic blows. "They want to make a deal, and it could definitely happen," he said in a speech in Washington.
Trump argued that Iran's military has been significantly degraded and its economy has deteriorated. "Their navy has been destroyed. Their air force has been destroyed," he said, adding that missile capabilities and air defense systems have also been hit. He even linked the drop in oil prices to US military achievements against Iran.
Alongside the possibility of a deal, the president made clear he would not accept a nuclear Iran: "We will not allow Iran to possess nuclear weapons. We will never allow Iran to obtain nuclear weapons."
