If you believe the buzz on left-wing social media, the skies are thick with leftists flying home to save the country. Every plane is packed, people are clinging to the sides of ships, stopping over in Cyprus and swimming the rest of the way.
The data tells a different story. Ben-Gurion Airport isn't unusually crowded. No surge in returning Israelis has been reported. Hotels aren't at capacity, and car-rental lots aren't empty.
But marketing has always been the left's strong suit. So naturally, each brave returnee poses for a dramatic photo at arrivals and posts a heartfelt message about coming home to rescue the state. Most of them mention, in passing, just how disconnected they've been from Israeli life, how many decades it's been since they set foot in the country, not to vote, not for reserve duty, not even to visit family. People who, by their own admission, haven't touched Israel from any direction in decades.
After seeing the 150th post or so from a middle-aged figure stepping off a plane and announcing he hasn't been in Israel for 30 years but has now arrived "to save the state," a simple question came to mind.
This is what your "majority" looks like?
It's a bit embarrassing that a public claiming to be the true Zionist majority needs a cocktail of Israeli expats, or as the father of the modern Israeli left, Yitzchak Rabin zt"l, once called them, "a fallout of weaklings" --- mixed with a heaping portion of Arabs.
These are the people who spent three years shouting about Zionism and democracy at Kaplan? Vote importers and peddlers of Arab parties?
What does it mean if the "Zionist left" in Israel cannot achieve a majority, in absolute mathematical terms, without leaning on the votes of anti-Zionist Arabs, some of whom openly oppose the state, combined with people who renounced Zionism decades ago and left for easier lives in the Valley or Queens?
To me, it means one thing. The left has understood its situation. It has understood that it was defeated by demography, and it decided to release all the brakes. That's what we saw at Kaplan: battalions and brigades of deranged adults rebelling against the new majority. It set the country on fire, used violence, money and force to squeeze the state back into its hands.
It didn't work out the way the left described. Everyone experienced the consequences of the fire they lit, from left to right. So now the left is turning to a new method: creating an imaginary, fictitious, artificial majority.
Gathering and scraping together fringe groups, expats, Arabs, anti-Zionists and more, all for one more time, one more grip on the steering wheel of power. Through it, they will establish an eternal dictatorship by appointing ultra-radical judges to the Supreme Court and legislating anti-democratic Basic Laws like a Basic Law on the Declaration of Independence. Through these, the High Court will determine the character of the state forever and ever. And then it won't matter what the election results are, it won't matter who's in power.
Because it doesn't matter if you choose to turn right, left or drive straight, the car will still be on the road they built.
