Lionel Messi opened his 2026 World Cup campaign in spectacular fashion, scoring a hat trick in Argentina’s 3-0 win over Algeria and tying the all-time World Cup scoring record.

The Argentina captain, still carrying the glow of the 2022 World Cup title in Qatar, reached 16 career goals in the tournament, matching the historic mark set by German striker Miroslav Klose.

One more goal will make Messi the leading scorer in World Cup history.

Messi began the scoring in the first half after receiving a precise pass from Rodrigo De Paul and finishing calmly in front of goal. Argentina controlled the match from there, showing the confidence and rhythm expected of the defending world champions.

In the second half, Messi added his second goal to put the match beyond Algeria’s reach. He then delivered the night’s defining moment, completing his hat trick with a classic finish that drew applause from across the stadium.

Beyond the three goals, Messi also added another personal milestone to his extraordinary career. By stepping onto the pitch, he became the first footballer ever to appear in six different World Cup tournaments.

He also extended his record number of World Cup appearances, adding yet another line to a career already crowded with records, trophies and moments that make everyone else’s résumé look like a grocery receipt.

For Argentina, it was a dream start to its title defense. Unlike the shaky opening to the previous World Cup, when Argentina was stunned by Saudi Arabia, this time the Albiceleste looked composed, connected and full of confidence on their way to their first three points of the tournament.

All eyes now turn to Argentina’s next group stage match, where Messi will have the chance to do what now feels almost inevitable: score again, break Klose’s record and stand alone as the greatest goal scorer in World Cup history.
