Yoav Gallant

Former Israeli Defense Minister who served during Operation Swords of Iron, known for his military expertise and controversial dismissals from Netanyahu's government

Yoav Gallant served as Israel's Minister of Defense during a critical period in the country's history, including the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack and the subsequent Operation Swords of Iron. A former IDF Major General, Gallant has been a prominent member of the Likud party and has held various positions in Israel's security establishment.

Gallant's tenure as Defense Minister ended in March 2024 when Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed him for the second time, sparking widespread protests and international attention. His dismissal came amid disagreements over military strategy, the handling of the war in Gaza, and approaches to the hostage crisis.

During his time as Defense Minister, Gallant played a crucial role in managing Israel's multi-front security challenges, including operations against Hamas in Gaza, confrontations with Hezbollah in the north, and tensions with Iran. He was particularly vocal about the need to return Israeli hostages and frequently provided strategic assessments of Israel's military situations.

A significant aspect of Gallant's legacy involves his stance on military service reform, particularly regarding the ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) community. He approved the issuance of thousands of draft notices to Haredi men, though these efforts faced significant challenges with low compliance rates.

In early 2024, Gallant faced additional international challenges when the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for both him and Prime Minister Netanyahu, related to alleged war crimes in Gaza. This development complicated Israel's diplomatic relations and raised questions about international law enforcement jurisdiction over Israeli officials.
