Shmuel Harlap Dies at 82

The chairman of Colmobil Group and prominent tech investor passed away after leading Israel's largest car importer and making transformative philanthropic contributions

Dr. Shmuel Harlap

Dr. Shmuel Harlap, a prominent Israeli businessman, technology investor, and philanthropist, has died at the age of 82.

In 1982, Harlap was appointed chairman of Colmobil, the automotive import company his father had founded. Under his leadership, the firm grew into Israel's dominant car importer, expanding beyond its original Mercedes franchise to bring major brands including Mitsubishi and Hyundai to the Israeli market. At its peak, Colmobil controlled approximately 20 percent of the country's automotive sector.

Beyond the automotive industry, Harlap became a significant player in Israel's technology ecosystem. His most notable investment was in Mobileye, the autonomous driving technology company. When Intel acquired Mobileye, the transaction generated over one billion dollars in value for Harlap and his investment vehicle. He subsequently invested in additional technology and medical companies, including Orcom and AirViz.

Harlap held a doctorate in philosophy from Harvard University and previously served as a lecturer in political science at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

His philanthropic activities matched the scale of his business success. Following the October 7 attacks, Harlap and his wife donated 120 vehicles to residents of the Gaza border communities of Nir Oz, Nahal Oz, Be'eri, and Kfar Aza. A year later, the couple made a transformative gift of 180 million dollars to establish a new heart and brain center at Beilinson Hospital.

Harlap is survived by his wife, with whom he partnered in both business and philanthropy throughout his life. His legacy extends across Israel's automotive and technology sectors, fields that were reshaped by his vision and investment. Beyond the corporate valuations and deal structures, those who knew him point to his quiet commitment to rebuilding communities touched by conflict, a final chapter that defined not just his wealth, but his values.
