“Only The Chareidim Know All The Names Of The Hostages & Their Mothers”
Exclusive: Hostage’s Mother Reveals Romi has Been Keeping Shabbat Since her Release from Hamas Captivity
Meirav Leshem-Gonen, the mother of Romi Gonen, who was freed from Gaza after 471 days, recently shared her emotional journey in an interview with Kol Berama. Romi was released two and a half weeks ago, and since her return, she has remained strong in her faith, even keeping Shabbat.

Meirav described Romi's strength in a way that was hard to put into words, explaining that it was the deep connection to Judaism, particularly the concept of mutual responsibility, that kept her and others in captivity going. “People cared about and worried about them,” she said, highlighting the power of Jewish solidarity that transcends individual suffering, according to the YWN report.
Romi and her friend in captivity found a way to pray together, even in the harshest conditions. “In captivity, the difference between the terrorists and Jewish solidarity, which is the secret of our existence, is very strong,” Meirav shared, reflecting on the deep impact that the support from the Jewish community had on her daughter’s perseverance.
Before October 7, Meirav, who had no previous connection to the Haredi community, had little knowledge of their ways. She now feels connected to these communities that embody the strength and diversity of the Jewish people. “I feel that we’re on the right path, that Am Yisrael is strong,” she said.
One of the most touching moments for Meirav occurred on Purim when she visited Bnei Brak. There, she discovered that the residents of the city were praying three times a day for the hostages. "It's the only community that knows the names of all the hostages and their mothers because they daven for them," she said, emphasizing the deep care and solidarity that permeated the community. She was moved by posters on the streets urging restraint and unity, a reminder of the shared fate of the Jewish people during such a painful time.
Meirav also shared with Ynet that her daughter Romi endured immense suffering in Gaza after being shot on October 7. Without painkillers, her captors stood by and laughed at her agony. Now, Romi is facing complex surgery and a lengthy rehabilitation process, but with the love and support from her community, she continues to display the incredible strength that has inspired so many.
