Justice for the 21: IDF Eliminates Terrorist Behind One of the War’s Worst Tragedies
In a precision operation, the IDF has killed Yusuf Ibrahim Mahmoud Bashiti, the Hamas terrorist responsible for the anti-tank missile attack that killed 21 Israeli soldiers in January 2024.

The IDF and the Shin Bet have successfully carried out a targeted strike in central Gaza, eliminating several armed Hamas terrorists who were in the process of planning an immediate attack against Israeli forces. Among those killed was Yusuf Ibrahim Mahmoud Bashiti, a key Hamas operative who played a central role in the catastrophic building collapse in Al-Maghazi on January 22, 2024. That incident, which resulted in the deaths of 21 reserve soldiers, was one of the single deadliest events for the IDF since the beginning of the war. Security officials stated that the elimination of Bashiti represents an "important closing of a circle" for the families of the fallen and the military establishment.
Precision Strikes and Tactical Success
The operation was the result of high level intelligence gathering by the Southern Command, which identified a cell of terrorists approaching the designated "yellow line" with the intent of launching a strike. The IDF utilized precision munitions to neutralize the cell before they could execute their plan. In addition to Bashiti, the strike killed several other high value targets, including a member of the elite Nukhba force, a Hamas squad leader, and an officer within the Hamas police force. These individuals were identified as active threats who had been coordinating terror activities against Israeli troops operating in the central Gaza corridor.
The IDF emphasized that its forces remain deployed in accordance with existing agreements but will continue to act aggressively to remove any immediate dangers. "The terrorists posed a real threat to IDF forces and were therefore attacked in precision strikes," the military stated. The elimination of the cell not only prevents a new attack but serves as a stern reminder that the military intends to track down every individual involved in major attacks against its personnel. As the war continues, the IDF remains focused on dismantling the command structure of Hamas and ensuring that those responsible for the Maghazi disaster are held accountable.
