Fooling the Haredi Public

Social media has been set ablaze following the publication of a photo showing a young man, previously celebrated as a "persecuted Torah scholar," vacationing in Thailand. The individual was at the center of intense Haredi demonstrations a year ago after being arrested at Ben Gurion Airport on suspicion of desertion. At the time, extremist religious factions used his case to claim that the military was aggressively targeting devout yeshiva students.

During the height of the protests, the Jerusalemite Faction and other radical groups described him as a scholar within his first year of marriage who lived a life dedicated entirely to the study of Torah. They organized mass gatherings near military prisons and warned that his imprisonment was a secularist attempt to shed "God’s yoke." Leading rabbis even wrote letters to him in detention, praising him for "sanctifying God’s name" by refusing to serve.

However, the new images from Thailand show the young man dressed in secular clothing, enjoying a tropical holiday. It has now emerged that despite his religious upbringing, he was not actually a yeshiva student at the time of his arrest and was instead working for a living. The revelation has caused significant embarrassment for the religious leaders who had previously championed his cause as a holy struggle.

Even Shas’s Council of Torah Sages had joined in the support, with Rabbi Avraham Salim offering prayers for his release and labeling him a "dear scholar." Another leader, Rabbi Zvi Friedman, had urged the young man to give up his life rather than be conscripted into what he called a "melting pot for secularism." These statements now stand in stark contrast to the young man’s current lifestyle.

After his release a year ago, he was greeted with festive receptions and honored by rabbis as a hero of the faith. The case was used as a powerful propaganda tool during the ongoing national debate over the draft law. Critics now argue that the entire episode was a calculated manipulation by extremist factions to generate public anger and maintain their political leverage against the government.

The incident highlights the growing tensions within the Haredi community regarding who truly qualifies for military exemptions. While the official narrative often presents a unified front of scholars, cases like this suggest a more complex reality. As the photos continue to circulate, many are questioning the transparency of the organizations that lead these high profile anti conscription campaigns.
