Four IDF soldiers were killed and two others wounded during a clash with Hezbollah operatives in southern Lebanon, the military announced.

Three of the fallen soldiers were identified as Capt. Noam Madmoni, 22, from Sderot; Staff Sgt. Ben Cohen, 21, from Lehavim; and Staff Sgt. Maxim Entis, 21, from Bat Yam. All served in the Nahal Brigade’s Reconnaissance Unit. The name of the fourth soldier has not yet been released.

In the same incident, one soldier was seriously wounded and a reservist was moderately injured.

According to an initial IDF investigation, the clash took place around 6:30 p.m. in the western sector of southern Lebanon, where Nahal reconnaissance troops identified a Hezbollah cell operating nearby.

The soldiers engaged the gunmen at close range, and the military said several Hezbollah operatives were hit during the exchange.

As troops attempted to evacuate the wounded, Hezbollah operatives fired an anti-tank missile at the soldiers. The missile did not cause additional casualties, according to the IDF.

Israeli forces responded with tank fire and airstrikes targeting the Hezbollah operatives in the area.

The incident marks one of the deadliest engagements for Israeli forces in Lebanon since the launch of Operation Roaring Lion, as fighting continues along the northern front.
