The violent robbery-turned-assault has shocked the popular tourist destination, with India’s authorities condemning the crime and Israel’s consulate in Bangalore stepping in to assist the surviving Israeli victim.

An Israeli tourist and a local guesthouse operator were brutally raped, and a man traveling with them was found dead following a violent attack by three motorcyclists in Hampi, a historic town in Karnataka, India, late Thursday night. The incident, reported Saturday by the ANI news agency citing local police, has sparked outrage and prompted a manhunt for one remaining suspect.

The attack occurred on the riverbank near Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage site popular with tourists. The Israeli woman, the guesthouse owner, and three other travelers—two Indian men and an American—had gathered for dinner and stargazing. Around 10:30 PM, three men on a motorcycle approached the group under the pretense of seeking fuel. When told there was no gas station nearby, the assailants demanded 100 rupees (about $1.20 USD).

“We told them we had no money,” the guesthouse operator recounted to police. “One of the men gave them 20 rupees, but they kept insisting.” The situation escalated when the group refused further payment. The suspects began threatening them with stones, then launched a savage assault.

Two of the attackers raped the Israeli tourist and the guesthouse operator, beating them with stones and dragging them toward a ditch. “I was bleeding heavily,” the guesthouse owner said. “One choked me and tore off my clothes while they took turns.” Meanwhile, the third assailant pushed the male tourists into a nearby water channel. One Indian man’s body was later found in the ditch, though police have not confirmed the cause of death. The attackers fled with two mobile phones, 9,500 rupees (about $113 USD), and the group’s bags.

Police Response and Arrests

Koppal police swiftly arrested two suspects, identified through witness statements and evidence at the scene. “We’ve identified the third suspect and expect to apprehend him soon,” said the district superintendent. The investigation continues, with authorities treating the case as a robbery-turned-sexual assault and possible homicide.

Photos circulating on Twitter show police securing the area, a serene riverbank now marked by tragedy. India’s government condemned the attack as a “heinous crime,” with officials vowing justice.

Israeli Consulate Steps In

Israel’s Foreign Ministry confirmed the incident, stating, “The Consulate in Bangalore and the Department for Israelis Abroad are handling the case.” The Israeli victim, whose identity remains undisclosed, is receiving consular support. Details about her condition were not released.

A Shocking Incident in a Tourist Haven

Hampi, known for its ancient ruins and tranquil vibe, has rarely seen such violence. The attack has raised concerns about tourist safety in India, particularly for women, echoing past high-profile cases that damaged the country’s reputation.

As the manhunt intensifies, the survivors’ ordeal underscores the fragility of safety in even the most picturesque destinations. Updates are expected as police close in on the final suspect.
