Lapid: Netanyahu bloc crushed in polls

Opposition leader Yair Lapid responds to exit polls showing Likud as largest party but unable to form government, while left-wing bloc strengthened but dependent on Arab parties

Opposition leader Yair Lapid responded Tuesday to exit polls showing Likud as the largest party but without the ability to form a government, while the left-wing bloc strengthened but remains dependent on the Arab parties. In his remarks, Lapid emphasized that the results represent a blow to the Netanyahu bloc.

"Don't let them confuse you, the Netanyahu bloc suffered a crushing defeat," Lapid said. "This is a complete collapse and the public told them to go home."

Lapid's remarks continue the line taken by leaders of the change bloc, who point to the majority for the bloc rather than for any single party. Earlier, Democrats chairman Yair Golan said "the public has spoken, it fired the Netanyahu government. We received a historic opportunity to establish a real change government in Israel and we do not intend to give it up. We represent here a tremendous public, which fought in the streets for four years, which mobilized for the party and went out to the field to persuade."

"We are going to do everything to ensure that such a government is established," he added. "We are ready to work with all our partners, to bridge the gaps and to take responsibility. The public has spoken. Now it is our turn to do the work."
