26th Knesset

Opposition: elections likelier than coalition

As Knesset opens and Knesset speaker battle heats up, opposition leaders privately concede they have no path to a functioning government, and expect another election soon

Leaders of the opposition bloc are privately acknowledging that another round of elections is far more likely than the formation of a functioning government, according to conversations among members of the bloc's various factions.

Despite the grim forecast and the absence of a majority to form a coalition, the opposition is making ongoing efforts to preserve the bloc's framework and coordinate at least joint parliamentary moves as the 26th Knesset opens.

Two main objectives are at the center of internal coordination among the factions: a joint effort to replace sitting Knesset speaker Amir Ohana, alongside an attempt to formulate bills to repeal the judicial reform laws advanced in the previous term.

The parliamentary cooperation, however, is running into serious obstacles in light of internal battles that have erupted in recent days: the fight over the identity of the next Knesset speaker is deepening suspicions between Gadi Eisenkot, who is demanding a candidate from his faction (such as Chili Tropper or Matan Kahana), and Yair Lapid and Naftali Bennett, who fear a unilateral move by National Unity with Netanyahu and are demanding Lapid be appointed as insurance.
