Navy drill at Zikim: gunfire expected

IDF Spokesperson announces two-day naval exercise starting Tuesday morning through Wednesday afternoon; public warned of heavy security presence and sounds of fire

IDF Spokesperson Efi Defrin

The IDF Spokesperson announced Monday evening that a naval exercise will take place at Zikim Beach starting Tuesday morning and continuing through Wednesday afternoon.

The public is advised that during the drill, there will be heavy movement of security forces and vessels in the area, along with sounds of gunfire and explosions. There is no cause for concern regarding a security incident.

Zikim Beach was the site of a Hamas attack on the morning of October 7, when terrorists from Hamas's naval commando unit attempted to infiltrate the area during the broader assault on Gaza border communities.

At 06:29 that morning, sirens sounded in the area as seven rubber boats carrying approximately 38 terrorists departed from the Gaza Strip. Israeli Navy forces identified the boats and destroyed several of them, but some of the terrorists managed to reach the shore.

Dozens of civilians were present at the beach at the time, including swimmers, surfers and fishermen. When the terrorists arrived, they opened fire on the civilians and began a killing spree. Some people attempted to hide in the bomb shelter and public restrooms, but the terrorists reached those locations as well.
