A postal worker in New York was arrested after allegedly pushing a four-year-old ultra-Orthodox Jewish boy to the ground in an incident captured on video, police said.
Footage from the scene shows the child approaching a parked mail truck before the worker exits the vehicle and forcefully shoves him, knocking the boy onto the pavement. The child is then seen getting up and retrieving his yarmulke before walking away.
Police in Ramapo said the 39-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a child and attempted assault in the third degree, both misdemeanors.
Authorities said the incident occurred after the worker had reportedly been shouting at children in the area prior to the encounter.
The suspect has not been publicly identified.
Local officials condemned the incident, calling for accountability and a full investigation. New York State Senator Bill Weber said he shared public “concern and outrage” over the case and urged that the suspect be prosecuted.
Congressman Mike Lawler also called for a thorough investigation, describing the incident as an act of violence against a child.
The case has drawn attention in the local community, particularly given the victim’s age and the nature of the attack, as police continue to review the circumstances surrounding the incident.
