New York City police officers arrested a suspect Thursday afternoon following a double stabbing on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Law enforcement authorities confirmed that one of the victims is a Jewish man who was targeted while walking to his synagogue. Police sources reported that the suspect uttered "Allahu Akbar" during the assault, prompting detectives to investigate potential hate crime and terrorism angles.
The violence commenced near West 86th Street and Amsterdam Avenue, where a 40 year old man was approached from behind and stabbed in the back. The assailant then proceeded several blocks toward Central Park West, where he confronted and stabbed a 50 year old man in the chest. Emergency responders from Hatzalah arrived at the scene shortly after the attacks to render aid and transport both victims to a local hospital.
Medical personnel reported that one of the victims remains in critical condition. NYPD officers, assisted by volunteers from Manhattan Shomrim, established crime scene perimeters across the neighborhood and successfully taken the suspect into custody shortly after the second assault. The identity of the second victim has not been released by police officials.
Community leaders expressed deep concern over the violent outbreak, which occurred directly ahead of the Jewish fast of Tisha B'Av. Prominent civic activist Chaskel Bennett publicly criticized official responses to rising anti-Semitism in the city, stating, "Few public figures in recent memory have so consistently managed to shock the collective conscience as Mayor Mamdani." Bennett added, "You don't get to help light the fire and then offer condolences to those feeling the heat."
The NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force and counter-terrorism units maintain an active investigation into the attacker's background and potential political or religious radicalization. While the suspect remains in police custody facing assault charges, official classification regarding hate crime designations remains pending formal review by the Manhattan District Attorney's Office.
