The deployment is part of a U.S.-led initiative to help oversee the implementation of the truce. The UK Ministry of Defence confirmed that a “small number of UK planning officers” have embedded within the so-called Civil-Military Coordination Centre (CMCC), a task force being formed for post-conflict stabilisation and humanitarian coordination.

According to the John Healey, the UK’s Defence Secretary, the country will play an “anchor role”, offering “specialist experience and skills” rather than leading the mission.
